Perhapanauts creators Todd Dezago and Craig Rousseau have kicked off a new webcomics feature on the Perhapanauts website. Kicking off today is a new “What if?” style story, titled “Saints & Sinners,” featuring characters from the book by Rich Woodall and Jason Copland. And they’re looking for more stories in a similar vein.

Dezago posted earlier this week that “Tales from the Perhaps” will feature “alternate reality versions of our characters, not the characters themselves. por exemplo; put them in different time periods, different worlds, different story genres. a western, a horror movie, a space opera.”

In addition, they also plan to a series of webcomics called “Strange Tales of the Perhaps,” which he said are “a lot looser and wackier. the sky’s the limit and the weirder, the better! these are our versions of the bizarro comics and the strange tales stories.”

Heh. I don't know for sure whether I'd ever actually read a series like this, but I do have to at least say I think the pitch looks well put together.

I think this is pretty interesting and very detailed. It would make Viceroy a deep and fun character. But, he still needs a rogues gallery of some sort if this is to be an on-going. Radion is not enough. Especially if Radion gets beat the first time he shows up in the series. Perhaps some where early in this series Viceroy show up to help someone like Green Arrow apprehend Radion, and Radion get away because of bungling interference of Viceroy. Other than that minor suggestion, I like this concept.

@Lee - great point. Really great point. Viceroy does need his own little gallery of bad guy stooges. I'm whip Peter into getting onto this, stat! But seriously, great suggestion.

@Anon 3 - You'll see just two days ago I reviewed JIM #622. Kirk reviewed Fear Itself #1 not long before that. Ah...then it gets a bit thin, I guess. Sorry.

When you ask 'you guys' do you mean me and Peter? Because we've never done reviews together (ba-bum-cha) but if you mean the site then there's a few reasons. Kirk has been off with personal reasons, he's not up to a weekly review schedule just yet. Ryan S is busy commanding fleets of artists to do his bidding, it is apparently a time consuming gig. And me, well, I write 3 reviews a week for CBR and have a few other things going on in my life, promotions, babies, other writing. I would love to do a weekly review column but just don't have the time for it. We surely hope to get more reviews out to you folks soon.

Culture, characters, copyright and Creative Commons

Tuo the Alligator Man

The 30 Characters Challenge, which asked comic creators to come up with a new character every day last month, ended earlier this week, and if you head over to the site right now, you can see round-up posts by some of the artists who participated of all the characters they came up with in what was surely a very busy November.

One participant was Vito Delsante, writer of FCHS, who I spoke with about another character-in-progress last summer. Delsante created 35 new characters — or in a few cases revised older public domain characters — and now he’s releasing them into the public domain under a Creative Commons license.

Delsante said he was inspired by Mark Waid’s Harvey Awards keynote speech, in particular the part where Waid said “…culture is more important than copyright.”

“Waid argues many points about many different topics, but this…these bolded words above, hit me in a very soft spot (I’ll readily admit that I might be missing the point of his speech). He’s right,” Delsante wrote on his blog. “The idea of public domain adds to comics. But there are very few characters (as compared to copyrighted/franchise/creator owned characters) that are in the public domain. That changes today.”

Delsante isn’t asking for money or even the right to approve their usage; he only asks that he be credited with their creation when they’re used. Waid gives his approval in the comments section to Delsante’s post, while Sage LaTorra has already said he is going to use them in a role-playing game he’s designing. Although as Sean Kleefeld points out, it’s highly unlikely Spider-Man will be facing any of these characters anytime soon for a variety of reasons, it’s still an interesting move and I admire the spirit under which Delsante is doing it. Although I probably would have kept Tuo, the Alligator Man for myself.
