After a stellar run as the back-up story in Erik Larsen’s Savage Dragon, the Michel Fiffe-edited series Twisted Savage Dragon Funnies is making its way toward the bookshelf with a collection that boasts some amazing extras.

The collected Twisted Savage Dragon Funnies is scheduled to hit this July as an over-sized 144 page book, collecting all 12 back-up stories as well as some new material from the likes of Tom Scioli, Jim Rugg, Jasen Lex, Paul Maybury, Zack Soto and others.

If you missed it in singles, this collection is worth a flip through. You have to admire Larsen’s agreeance to allow Fiffe and his team of creators to do this liberal a take on his characters. It really allows each of them to play to their strengths, and wish more creator-owned cartoonists would consider giving over the reins of their characters like this.

Marvel cartoons coming to Netflix streaming

Marvel announced late last week that a bunch of their classic cartoons are being released for Netflix streaming. Actually, “a bunch” is an understatement. It’s just about everything:

AWESOME but….where’s the 90′s Ironman and FF4 cartoons?

@Kayel – The 90s Iron Man is up there as Marvel Action Hour: Iron Man. But the 90s FF is definitely missing… which is not necessarily a bad thing, per se.

I WISH the friggin’ X-Men stuff was up there a while back when I started this ridiculous X-Men TV show review marathon thing I’m doing. The Marvel site, while commendable for posting most of these on there, can sometimes be a nightmare to navigate.

Also, Marvel recently semi-removed Avengers: EMH from their site, which I discovered last weekend. Sometimes the vids can be found if you dig really hard, but the they pretty much wiped out all the normal paths to locate them. Kinda odd if you ask me.

I have already gotten through the Black Panther series and just started the Spider-Woman series. Those are easy to catch on the fly as they are only 10 minutes an episode.

Well, “they promise that there’s ‘much more’ on the way.” Presumably this includes the Marvel Action Hour Fantastic Four, in all its hilariously-atrocious-rap-number glory. Can’t wait!!

I hope “much more” also includes some live-action stuff too. Not just the Hulk TV series, but Spidey (American and Japanese), Dr. Strange movie, Cap theatrical and TV movies of the 80s/90s, Hasslehoff as Nick Fury. Generation X.

Also, the 80s Spider-Woman, The Thing (“Thing Ring, do your thing”), FF with Herbie. And the MTV Spidey series. and the direct-to-video animated movies. Electric Company Spidey, too.

Then DC needs to spin-off their upcoming Cartoon Network block into a full-fledged animation and live-action channel.

That’s all I want.

I had a similar issue trying to play Black Panther, Hulk, and Silver Surfer through my Blu-Ray player. They didn’t even show up on the displayed queue for about 3-4 days even though they played fine on my desktop. There was a reviewer commenting about having a similar problem with Spider-Woman on his Xbox as well, so it doesn’t seem to be an isolated circumstance, but it is being addressed so you may want to try again.

Kirby, Ditko omnibus collections coming from DC next summer?

Here’s another nice catch by blogger Corey Blake, who spotted the Trouble collection on Amazon last month — Blake points out listings for upcoming omnibus collections from DC featuring the works of Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko.

Unfortunately there’s little information on either collection. The description on the Jack Kirby one, due at the end of July, focuses on his Green Arrow work: “In 1957, following the dissolution of his partnership with Joe Simon, Jack Kirby returned to DC Comics. Among his new assignments was the Green Arrow feature that ran simultaneously in ADVENTURE COMICS and WORLD’S FINEST COMICS, pitting the Emerald Archer and his sidekick, Speedy, against a plethora of foes.”

The Ditko one, meanwhile, doesn’t have a description, but the cover artwork (which likely isn’t final) features Shade, the Changing Man … so it’s probably a safe guess that it’ll contain Ditko’s eight-issue Shade series from the 1970s.

Also listed are the first arc from Infinity Inc. by Thomas and Ordway, the original Firestorm series and a collection of Gene Colan Batman stories. Looks like the embargo on mid-70s-to-mid-80s DC reprints is over.

Beyond that, Adams’ Deadman gets a paperback release, and Legion Lost is finally being collected.

Ahh, I assumed hardcover because of the price. Curses! (Of course, Amazon gets these wrong sometimes.)

It’s listed at 336 pages, so I figure that accounts for the price. I’d like it in hardcover myself. That run of Adventure and Aquaman was one of my favorite strips when I was a kid. Aparo’s art was amazing.

I actually prefer softcover. More affordable, takes up less space. But I assume I’m in the minority.

I can’t wait to see these confirmed in an official Previews solicitation hopefully sooner than later! I’ve been thinking for a while now that DC Comics has no interest in making any money off me as a fan. I mostly only collect reprints of classic comics and comic strips, and lately the number of offerings from DC has been rather sparse. For example, my Previews Order this month has three archives from Dark Horse, two Masterworks from Marvel, but only a Showcase Presents book from DC! So any kind of news like these collections is very welcome indeed!

I’m also hoping DC might consider publishing creator collections focusing on Alex Toth and Joe Kubert!

The Jack Kirby collection appears on the Random House Canada site.

December is always an off month for publishing. Publishers push their titles out by November so they are on retailer shelves in time for Black Friday. (Also, publishers tend to slow down in December, given the holidays.)
