Batman: Arkham City

Warner Bros. Interactive and DC Entertainment released the cover art to the upcoming Batman: Arkham City video game, which comes out in October.

The sequel to the well-regarded Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham City is set inside the newly constructed fortified walls that have transformed part of Gotham’s slums into a sprawling maximum-security prison for the city’s gangsters, thugs and criminally insane. The folks at the WB say it will be five times larger than the playable area of the first game. It will feature, of course, Batman, as well as the Joker, Catwoman, Two Face, the Penguin and a playable Robin (if you order it from Best Buy).

Brightest Day Aftermath: The Search for Swamp Thing

Although they previously teased it with two characters blacked out, DC Comics has now released the full covers (plural) for the first issue of Brightest Day Aftermath: The Search for Swamp Thing.

The above cover by Ardian Syaf and Vicente Cifuentes’ is the book’s final cover, with John Constantine and Zatanna appearing where big blobs of black once dwelled. And after the jump is J.G. Jones’ variant cover, featuring Batman, Swamp Thing and Constantine.

After all these years of having John drawn by the likes of John Ridgway, Tim Bradstreet, Gary Erskine, Warren Pleece, Steve Pugh, Sean Phillips, Mark Buckingham, Jock, Simon Bisley, Guy Davis , Dave McKean, David Lloyd, Frazer Irving, Sean Murphy, and Richard Corben I never realized how much I yearned to seem him drawn by people aping Jim Lee. Bats, Supes, and Z look as psyched as I am.

The scene I’m dying to see now that Constantine is back in the DCU:

(Two-shot, John and Batman. John has just given Bats a non-answer to some question. Batman is doing the whole tall-dark-and-scary thing.)
BATMAN: Don’t try my patience, Constantine…
(Same as previous panel. They’re looking each other in the eye. Batman is taller than John. John takes a drag on his cigarette. No dialogue.)
(Same as previous panel. John exhales a cloud of smoke. Still no dialogue.)
(Same as previous panel.)
JOHN: Listen, mate. I’ve been to hell and back–literally–three or four times. I’ve faced the First of the Fallen and lived to tell about it.
(Same as previous panel.)
JOHN: You want to SCARE me, you’re going to have to do better than that.
(John turns away from Batman. Looking back and smiling slightly, he delivers the punchline.)
JOHN: …Bruce.

Paul1963′s terrible fanfic scared me more than any Constantine Hellblazer book, that is for sure.

Not sure whether I want to applaud DC for keeping true to Constantine’s character and leaving that cancer stick in his hands, or to question how they can show him smoking on a cover of a comic that (in theory) kids will be seeing.

To be fair, kids see people smoking in public anyway. If it was something far worse than something that commonplace – and as long as it’s not on something aimed directly at kids – I, personally, don’t think it’s that big of a deal.

Batman gets a shadow, but not Superman or Zatanna? And where’s that light source, in Bat’s utility belt?

Constantine’s pose isn’t that great… Compare his lighting up in the regular cover to the one in the variant. And if he’s just lighting up, why so much smoke?

Plus they could have used the trees in the background to suggest Swamp Thing’s visage.

There’s too much “negative space” above Batman and Zatanna, to the left and right of Superman’s head. This is a bad composition, but the fault lies with the editor, not the artist. The editor should have improved this layout or requested a better design.

They should have filled in that negative space with a dope Zatanna top hat. The editor saw this and said, “Yeah, fuck it. Whatever.” The title of this book is “Brightest Day Aftermath: The Search for Swamp Thing”. With the length of that I am pretty surprised they were able to fit four people on the cover. I bet 6 bucks there was a debate over whether or not to have Supe’s eyes have that weird “I just shot some heat vision” red smoke crap coming out of them.

That top cover is downright awful. Seriously. I don’t think I’ve seen any Syaf art that wasn’t somewhere between “eh whatever” and shitty.

Vasilis Lolos is nothing if not creative. But the same creative mind that drew Pirates of Coney Island and collaborated on Pixu and 5 can sometimes go down a road that ends up a dead end. But Lolos isn’t the kind of artist to throw it all away. This week, Vasilis Lolos put online — for free — an unfinished 80-page graphic novel that he’d been working on as far back as 2002.

“Somewhere in 2002-3 I had an idea for a comic, a Frankenstein tale set in a Metropolis world,” explained the artist on his blog. “It was about a boy that had his heart stolen by an evil witch. He had to claim his self back from the owner of his heart. A quest troubled by the fact that he was in love with her (coz she was the owner of his heart, literally, har har)I did many takes on that idea, a couple of shorts and a load of illus. Then I put it on the back burner.”

Lolos’ comic currently goes under the moniker of Freak-enstein, and although he hasn’t worked on it since 2004, Lolos has hopes to revisit it — and re-do it — someday.
