Weekly Comic Book Review’s Top Picks

The Walking Dead #86 - PREVIEWBatman: Gates of Gotham #2 - ReviewWeekly Comic Book Review’s Top PicksPosted on June 29, 2011 by Ray Hilario

Alex’s Top Picks

Best From The Past Week: Batman: Gates of Gotham #2 – Detective work and an overarching sense of mythos and history that serves to enhance the story and provide atmosphere without overwhelming the reader makes for an awesome read.  Really fun artwork makes it an even more awesome read.

Most Anticipated: Scalped #50 – Though it doesn’t get as much press as it should, make no mistake, issue after issue, Scalped is continually among the best of the month.  If you at all enjoy Jason Aaron’s other work, you need to be reading this; it’s the man’s best work by far.And here we are, at 50 issues.  Not at all shabby for a creator-owned Vertigo series.  I’m really interested to see what Aaron has in store for us in this sure to be special, landmark issue.

Other Picks: Detective Comics #878, THUNDER Agents #8, American Vampire #16, Amazing Spider-Man #664, FF #5, Venom #4

Dean’s Top Picks

Best From The Past Week: 2000 AD June “Pack” Progs 1732 – 1735 – This is kinda a weird pick because it isn’t one comic…..it’s four.  I just started reading 2000 AD for the first time and really enjoyed my first exposure.  If you aren’t familiar, 2000 AD is a weekly anthology comic that has been published in England since 1977, so the numbers get high really fast.  Here in the United States, we get them in monthly “packs” of 4 issues at once although they are going to weekly publication in the US in August I believe.  I can’t tell you how satisfying these were to read.  Even though I was picking up in the middle of an anthology series and many stories were 3-4 episodes into a tale, they had just enough exposition that I knew basically what was going on.  Bravo!  Really strong art too!  Why can’t American comics be more like this?

Most Anticipated: American Vampire #16 – Good Lord is this a packed week.  As I stared at my pull list about the only thing I was sure of was that X-Men: Prelude to Schism #4 would NOT be my most anticipated comics of the week.  Picking AV #16 off this list is like asking which of your 10 children do you love the most.  Still, Scott Snyder and Rafa Albuquerque’s tale of vampirism on a Japanese occupied Pacific island in WWII was taking some very cool twists toward the end of AV #15 and I’m very eager to see how things begin to resolve themselves.  American Vampire should be on everyone’s pull list.

Other Picks: Creepy Comics #6, Detective Comics #878, Scalped #50, Butcher Baker the Righteous Maker #4, The Walking Dead #86, Amazing Spider-Man #664, FF #5, Avengers: The Children’s Crusade #6

Weekly Comic Book Review’s Top Picks

Supergirl #65 - ReviewGladstone's School for World Conquerors #2 - ReviewInvincible Iron Man #505 - ReviewCinderella: Fables Are Forever #5 - ReviewWeekly Comic Book Review’s Top PicksPosted on June 21, 2011 by Ray Hilario

Alex’s Top Picks

Best From The Past Week: Invincible Iron Man #505 – Well, there were only two comics for me this week, and while neither of them were at all bad, I’m going with Matt Fraction’s Iron Man.  This issue showed what I wish a lot more event tie-in arcs would do: tie in to the event in question without forgetting or putting aside dangling plot elements and characters.  A fun read all around and that showed that an event tie-in arc doesn’t have to be something to groan about.

Most Anticipated: Captain America #619 – I’ve been absolutely loving everything about Ed Brubaker’s latest arc in its tone, story, voice, and unique structure.  Not only am I excited to see how he ties it all up, but I also want to see how he deals with Bucky’s death and Steve’s return to the shield.  Big things are afoot this month for Cap and Brubaker’s been in prime shape as of late.

Other Picks: Batman: Gates of Gotham #2, DMZ #66, Mighty Thor #3, Wolverine #11

Dean’s Top Picks

Best From The Past Week: 28 Days Later #24 – Endings are hard, so the degree of difficulty on this final issue of the series was pretty high.  The creators really nailed it and gave us a heartfelt finale that bridges the gap between the two films and does some interesting things with two characters that I’ve grown quite fond of.  Now that the series has wrapped, be sure to check out the trades.  Runner-up: Graveyard of Empires #1

Most Anticipated: Dark Horse Presents #2 – It’s a pretty light week for my pull list, so I’ll go with this second issue of Dark Horse’s revived anthology series.  I have no idea what will be between the covers, but chances are pretty high that there will be something good on the menu.

Other Picks: All Nighter #1, Hack/Slash #5, Thunderbolts #159, Wolverine #11, Incredible Hulks #631

DS’ Top Picks

Best From The Past Week: Warlord of Mars #7 – The best issue so far in this most excellent series. It took the weekly prize hands down. You must buy this series.

Most Anticipated: Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris #4 – Wow. Kirby Genesis stands to be awesome, but the Colossus of Mars 5-issue arc in Dynamite’s ongoing Warlord of Mars: Dejah Thoris series (#4 out this week) is still on the top of my pull list. Dynamite is bringing the feel and authenticity of Burroughs’ Barsoom to us.

Other Picks: Executive Assistant Iris #0, Kirby Genesis #1, Alpha Flight #1, Captain America Corps #1, X-Men #13

Alex’s Top Picks

Best From The Past Week: Journey into Mystery #624 – Truly among the very best comics being put out by the big two today, Journey into Mystery, or JIM as I like to call it, is a unique comic with gorgeous visuals and an immersive and characterful narrative experience.  If you are not reading this book and are at all interested in Marvel Comics, you are wrong and in need of correction.

Most Anticipated: Invincible Iron Man #505 – I seriously only have two comics to pick up on Wednesday.  I think that happens around twice a year.  It was either Iron Man or Avengers, so I’m going with the former.  Avengers’ current talking heads approach is a fun read, but not something I’m jumping up and down to get my hands on.  On the other hand, I was really digging the haunting, petrified Paris locale that Matt Fraction is conjuring up right now and am interested to see where it’s all going.

Comic Book Moments of the Week for 06/08/11

Welcome to the latest version of Moments of the Week, where it seems to be a little bit of a cool down week after the onslaught of the DC reboot/relaunch and the big Marvel and DC events. That doesn't mean there isn't a lot to catch up on, as we have Annihilators being the best team in comics, Red Robin has an awkward proposition, Ultimate Spider-Man gets shot again, and Booster Gold uses common sense trying to figure out the Flashpoint world. As always, more after the jump!

Annihilators #4

The Annihilators stop the Skrulls from trying to genetically turn the Dire Wraiths into a new version of Skrulls, and in the process merge the two suns together because they are too cool for school (they basically blast the suns together, how awesome is that?).

Ikon continues what she started earlier in the mini-series, maybe she should go hang out with Starfox when the group isn't saving the universe. And good news: the Annihilators return in September in Annihilators: Earthfall.

Batman: Arkham City #2

Joker was about to end up as dead as a Jason Todd by former Arkham Asylum guards, but Harley saves the day. Batman blows up their boat on his bat-ski, and they wind up.....

...in the newly walled off Arkham City, where no one knows that they are there. Some lovely Carlos D'Anda artwork here that really captures the videogames aspects, like Batman's detective mode. If you enjoyed the video game but haven't picked this up, you're missing out on some fun.

Batman & Robin #24

As seen last issue, Jason Todd is freed from the convoy by the Menagerie, and was going to just leave until their boss lets him know his former sidekick is being held hostage. Looks like a team up is going to happen!

2 Robins are company, 3 Robins are a crowd.

Booster Gold #45

Just use the internet. That's the kind of common sense thing every hero should do when they find themselves in a world similar to their own. Another interesting thing from this issue is that Captain Atom, who in this world is an old general without the powers, is using military tech to control Doomsday.

Fear Itself: Spider-Man #2

J. Jonah Jameson whips Spidey into shape in a way only he could. If there was ever to be a Green Lantern in the Marvel Universe, it would be Jameson.

Flashpoint: Emperor Aquaman #1

Geo-Force is saved from an ambush by Mera, in order to facilitate a treaty between the two kingdoms. In actuality, the ambush was a setup by Arthur in order to make Geo-Force side with the Atlanteans, who then kidnapped Brion and use his powers now as a weapon in their war against the Amazons. Total jerk move.

Ka-Zar #1

So the Savage Land/Pangea is dealing with internal strife from the neighboring tribes, and an outside business force is trying to buy off one of the tribes in order to mine for materials. The issue is a bit heavy handed with the politics, but the art by Pascal Alixe is really top notch.

Red Robin #24

In a scene that is making some rabble on the internet, an unknown villain is going to force herself onto Tim, killing him but also impregnating her. Stay strong, Tim, this might not matter in another two months!

Ultimate Spider-Man #159

And by shot again, I meant a photo. Looks like if Peter doesn't die in this issue, he will have to fake his death in order to protect his family, because everyone from the neighborhood is watching him fight the Sinister Five.

Guns don't kill people, Aunt May kills people. Looks like someone just got electroshooted, oh yeah.

X-Men Legacy #250

In the backup story for this anniversary issue, we find out what is going on in space with the Starjammers. If the story was confusing, it is actually supposed to be read from back to front in order to find out how Rachel became Revenant. So to the stars, X-Men, bolster your ranks before the Schism appears!

So I see Ultimate Spider-Man still sucks as a hero. This is one of the main series that got me into comics but I got sick of Peter being unable to win any fight without the help of others, although he usually beat the villains in the beginning, so he got worse somehow. Did he beat any of the Sinister Five? I heard about Vulture, but come on. I see even Aunt May can take down a villain (which was shocking though). So please, what has Peter done in this arc? I was hoping he would go out fighting like a hero against the Sinister Six.

June 11, 2011 1:21 PMKirk Warrensaid...

To be fair, he saved Captain America's life by taking a bullet in the stomach for him before going on to get kicked around by the Sinister Six.

June 11, 2011 2:09 PMTony Soldosaid...

I know, but he always gets his ass kicked even before. I just wanted to know if he beat any of them, besides Vulture. I see aunt May killed Electro, but what happened to Green Goblin, Sandman, and Kraven?

June 11, 2011 6:09 PMMidnight Monksaid...

I do believe that chick in Red Robin appeared in Issue 12 talking to Ra's Al Ghul about Tim being the "true" heir or something, can't remember the whole convo right now though

Shame not a single bit of this is going to matter once they cancel his awesme book which is stupid, they could've chopped off atleast 1 Batman book to keep this one going.

My name is Kirk Warren and I’m a full time comic fan blowing my pay cheques on way too many comics every week.

Back in the early 90's, my mother bought me a Spider-Man comic to shut me up on a trip. I didn’t know it at the time, but that moment changed my life. Since then I've become a full blown comic fan and now purchase well in excess of 20 comics per month plus trades and other comic related goods.

As you can see, I've taken my hobby to the next step with this blog and it's allowed me to connect every single day with thousands of people that share the same passion I have for comics and I wouldn't change that for the world.
