Steve Rogers is Captain America Again this July

July's Captain America #1, featuring the return of Steve Rogers as Captain America.  Written by Ed Brubaker with art by Steve McNiven. The New York Daiy News is running an exclusive announcing that Steve Rogers will be picking up his shield and resuming his role as Captain America again in this July's relaunch of Captain America.  While there have been rumours about Steve Rogers becoming Cap again (come on, there's a movie due out soon with Steve Rogers as Captain America, who didn't see this coming?), the NY Daily News confirmed it and also have the creative team behind the relaunch - Ed Brubaker continuing on as writer and Steve McNiven (Civil War, Old Man Logan) on art.
What remains up in the air is the status of current Captain America - Bucky Barnes.  With the announced Captain America Corps for June with the solicit listing "two Captain Americas" on the squad and Bucky Cap on the cover, are we looking at a Batman situation with multiple Caps running around?  Will Bucky die in Fear Itself to make room for Steve's return?  Who will run SHIELD if Steve is going to be running around as Cap again?

For Natasha's sake at least, I'm hoping Bucky doesn't die.

Wow! Bleeding Cool pretty much announced this a couple weeks ago, but they didn't have the artist listed. While I love Butch Guice to death, Steve McNiven is definitely a great choice! I'm a tad concerned with his output (more so I don't care about a book being late, but I don't want him replaced because of the lateness.)

Hoping Bucky also gets his own book (as Cap, or even Winter Soldier.) Maybe Butch can stay with this title! (They gotta do something with the original issues renumbering that just happened, right? Oh wait, it's Marvel...) He's a great character, and I would actually rather he stick around as Cap, but I guess we knew this would happen with the new movie coming out.

We all knew it was coming, but they better not kill Bucky.

OH and PS (forgot this) I couldn't IMAGINE the balls Marvel would have to have to kill off Bucky, after what it took to bring him back. It would be nuts! Especially since he's become a rather popular character. Someone does (of course) die in Fear Itself, but I'm hoping it's not Bucky.

It'd be like bringing back Gwen Stacy and then killing her off a couple years later!

^My feelings are with Matt on this one. Once Captain America movie was announced for July of 2011, it really has just working towards Steve getting back in the costume. And that's fine, I like Steve Rogers quite a bit and its Brubaker/McNiven(HOPEFULLY it comes out on time).

But I like Bucky Barnes, too, and I really hope he sticks around.

We all knew this was coming. It was inevitable.

Can't say I'm too surprised, if anything hopefully this means Steve Rogers will no longer be the "Top Cop", anyway I'll continue to avoid any book featuring him like a prom night dumpster baby :p

April 4, 2011 11:43 AMIvansaid...

Indeed. Lets just hope it's a good story.

Somehow I think marvel will lose more readers...

April 4, 2011 12:59 PMRyan K Lindsaysaid...

Perhaps Bucky will get a transfer into the Secret Avengers...I'd actually prefer that.

Or Nick Fury will be available after Secret Warriors ends...

As for Cap, I still wish he got an adjective like Thor and Iron Man...so sad.

April 4, 2011 3:56 PMAnonymoussaid...

Winter Soldier

April 4, 2011 4:34 PMmugiwarasaid...

I bet that Bucky will be the American Panther.
As for Steve, Brubaker made me like a character I've always found boring, but lately, he made me tired of him again.
I don't care anymore about Steve Jesus Rogers, neither about Brubaker's stories, after the Zemo thing.

You have to remember that with the sales of Fantastic Four #587, Marvel wants to kill off a superhero once every quarter. Can't say that'll be Bucky, but let the speculation begin.

April 4, 2011 5:05 PMDebrasaid...

@ Ryan well yeah , course you'd prefer that . Your credibility, in readers eyes is in marvel's pocket

April 4, 2011 5:07 PMLogansaid...

@Ryan. Bucky as the head of the Secret Avengers actually sounds amazing, I'd probably pick up that book. Also I wish that Cap got an adjective but I can't think of any. The Amazing Captain America? The Courageous Captain America? I dunno but I'm sure someone creative can come up with a good one.

April 4, 2011 5:35 PMGregsaid...

Yeah I'm going to pass on marvel now , to many recycled half assed stories at least DC' events have been creative . Fear itself t
Reads like a rejected hellboy story . Think I'll read indie for a while and pick and choose the rare mainstream stories that aren't tied to events or status quos

April 4, 2011 6:06 PMRyan K Lindsaysaid...

@Debra - I'm thoroughly confused...should I just steer clear of any Marvel threads on my own site...?

Should I want Bucky to join the JLA...?

Should I just flame this comment section saying Marvel is teh worzt!!!1!!!...?

Please advise as I now have no idea how to get through my days.

Also, have a look at the book I've been pumping all week. Which publisher is it from?

What were the two best books of last year in my opinion, and who published them?

Which publisher has been the only one to get a 5 star review from me on CBR?

Think about it and get back to me. If you're not too busy jumping the sharks of anonymous commenting...

April 4, 2011 7:21 PMGregsaid...

You know really don't have to be so patronizing . Please take little offence but Although your rebuttals are smart you come across as much of an ass as this Debra . And this hate for anonymous posters is ridiculous . It is perfectly reasonable for someone not wanting to put up their details for something as small as publishing the odd comment about captain Americas status.

April 4, 2011 7:47 PMRyan K Lindsaysaid...

Hey Greg, I do see what you mean. I usually just reply to amuse myself, lord knows I'll probably make no headway with Debra. I drip on the sarcasm (mileage may vary) but I don't want to just idiotically flame back, she doesn't deserve that, though I am curious as to what she thinks my contribution should be. I don't get her attack, I figure if she maybe thinks it through logically she can see where I'm coming from.

And I don't hate anonymous commenters, I hate people who use the anonymous function to be a$$#o!@$. You, Greg, use the anonymous function just fine. You're smart, have a point, and even when trashing me you make me agree. I'm fine with you, I'm not fine with people who just stab or straw man and do so with such comfort.

I hope you understand that, Greg. You seem like my kind of people. And I'll try not to be so patronising in the future. Cheers!

Watch them throw a change up, and Rikki Barnes will die instead!

@Anon21 - Rikki Barnes is already dead. At least that's the cliffhanger from Onslaught Unleashed #2.

My name is Kirk Warren and I’m a full time comic fan blowing my pay cheques on way too many comics every week.

Back in the early 90's, my mother bought me a Spider-Man comic to shut me up on a trip. I didn’t know it at the time, but that moment changed my life. Since then I've become a full blown comic fan and now purchase well in excess of 20 comics per month plus trades and other comic related goods.

As you can see, I've taken my hobby to the next step with this blog and it's allowed me to connect every single day with thousands of people that share the same passion I have for comics and I wouldn't change that for the world.
